Sources and methods

How to read our food data.

Trace a number back to its source, check the food form, and treat a household portion as an estimate until you know its weight.

What this website publishes

The food directory is a selected set of generic USDA FoodData Central SR Legacy records used by the app. SR Legacy is a historical dataset whose final release was April 2018; it is not a live catalogue of every brand. Each food page links to the original FDC record and shows its English description and form.

Calories and protein are shown only when present in the source snapshot. This website does not fill missing fat, carbohydrate or other nutrients with guesses or zeroes. The app also uses other catalogues and barcode services; those are not all represented in this website directory.

Nutrition values and portion weights are different sources

Per-100-g nutrition values come from the cited USDA record. Household weights come from the app’s portion table and retain their own source labels. A row marked “App estimate” is an estimated household weight, not a USDA measurement. Pieces, cups and bowls vary; use a measured gram weight when available. A listed portion is not a recommendation about how much to eat.

The calculation

Portion calories = calories per 100 g × portion weight in grams ÷ 100.

Worked example: a food with 130 kcal per 100 g has 195 kcal in 150 g. This is arithmetic for a stated food and weight, not a claim that an AI can measure that weight from a photo. We round displayed calories to whole numbers; small differences can result from rounding.

Match raw, cooked and dry forms

Use the weight and entry for the same form. Do not apply a dry-rice value to cooked-rice grams. Water, ingredients and cooking losses can change weight and composition, so these pages do not offer a universal raw-to-cooked conversion. For a packaged product, check that the label’s serving basis and preparation instructions match what you ate.

What AI adds

BiteJot AI helps identify foods and estimate amounts. A database match supplies nutrition values. Check the identity, food form, amount and missing items before saving. A photograph may hide sauces, oils or ingredients; an estimate can need correction. Recognition is not a laboratory measurement or a guarantee of nutritional accuracy.

Editorial responsibility and corrections

BiteJot AI maintains this website. Product explanations describe our own implementation; sourced educational material is not presented as advice from a clinician. We do not claim medical credentials or an endorsement from USDA, FDA, Apple, Cloudflare or OpenAI. Articles retain their original credits and licences where applicable. Source references and the calculation method matter more than an authority badge.
